Theme

Most subjects about which I’m likely to write can be fit into the theme indicated in the title:

Tinkering and other Dubious Practices

Tinkering: Making minor alternations to see if they improve things (or processes)

Dubious: Of uncertain integrity or status; could be a surprising gem or a hidden dog

Practices: Habits, behaviors, or even social arrangements that create some value if done well (e.g. chess, conversation, medicine, play)

Micropractices: I’m interested in practices that are more everyday, technical, or mundane (e.g. cleaning, bike repair, blogging, organizing). In other words, I’m interested in practices that are readily amenable to tinkering. For example, the minor change of adopting a boilerplate manager can save a ton of time, but does require tinkering. On the other hand, even higher level practices like design or research are amenable to tinkering, and that’s fun too.

Of course, tinkering is a dubious practice. What are some others?
